6 Tips to Buying a Car

Buying a car can be a stressful event. Here at True Sky we want to help it be more enjoyable. We’ve come up with 6 steps to make your next buying experience better.

1. DO YOUR RESEARCH.

Knowledge is power. It’s harder for people to take advantage of you if you have already done your research. Take your time during this step. There is no such thing as being too prepared.

  • Research which car you want.
  • Compare it to others in it’s class.
  • Check the Kelly Blue Book price.

2. SHOP AROUND.

Take the time and shop around! Don’t walk into one dealership and assume they have the best deal. Visit a few dealerships. Since you’re visiting multiple places, you could try the “walk out” tactic. Normally, they’ll offer you their rock-bottom price as you walkout.

Remember, you can see what other dealerships are offering online that are further away. Most places base their prices differently depending on where they are located.

3. TEST DRIVE.

Always take the time to test drive. It is possible that it may look perfect for you on paper, but not once you are behind the wheel. Things to look for while you’re test driving:

Handling: Make sure it handles how you expect it to. This includes the breaks and acceleration.

Controls: Try all of the controls to make sure they work. Check the air, turn signals, windshield wipers and anything else you can think of.

The ride: Is the ride comfortable? You will likely be spending the next few years in this vehicle, make sure you’re comfortable.

4. NEGOTIATE.

This is a big investment, so fight for the price you want. Do everything you can to reach a price that you are comfortable with because you are the one that will be stuck with the payments. One way to negotiate is to start with a ridiculous number, and work backwards from that. Stay strong and if they won’t give you the price you want then leave.

5. BUY A CAR YOU CAN AFFORD.

It is easy to get excited about a vehicle that is outside of your budget. Don’t let the sales person tell you what you can afford. Before getting to the dealership set a budget and stick to it. The alternative could cause you to be missing payments because you can’t afford them. That can really hurt your credit. Always buy a vehicle you can afford.
